Stories of the Church...
A Time of Remembrance

for the 50th Anniversary of our building

As I share my personal memories of our church activities of the past 50 years, I'd ask that each of you also reflect on your own First Austin memories, too.

On a personal level, I recall that my parents actively set the example of Christian living, with my dad being a deacon for most of his life, and my mom's long-time participation in the Mary Martha class.

Our own family has grown up in this church, with daughter Lori marrying then youth minister Kevin Mitchell and being treated to one of Gloria McCullough's wonderful receptions in Fellowship Hall. Our son Todd was also married to Shelly in this beautiful sanctuary.

And I truly enjoyed teaching a children's Sunday Class with Chyrisse Miller. It's gratifying to occasionally see some of those students who are now adults and enjoying success.

One of the critical elements in my Christian life was the Adult Sunday School class taught by Don Searles. I clearly recall that his lessons created meaningful conversations and examples for success based on Christian living, which have strongly influenced my own life.

On the same note, long-time teacher Martha Hawkins still leads the Love Class which my wife has attended for many years.

And of course, one of the foundation stones of our church is the music program, which Bob and Millie Downer so successfully led for many years.

Don Searles and his wife Sue also launched the Prime Time scenic trip program, which led trips throughout Texas, offering an opportunity for church members to get better acquainted and develop lasting friendships.

My wife, Carol, participated in the Juarez mission program, traveling to El Paso with Sarah Landes and First Austin adults and youths for years, assisting a church in El Paso which supports a sister church in Juarez.

Finally, I also have fond memories of our church camping group initiated by Berry and Jean English. These experiences and fellowship help to gain an appreciation of God’s creations…the great outdoors.

In summary, I have found that these memories of the past 50 years can be sed as a basis for continued service, Christian learning and application, and the opportunity to practice those principles in everyday life.
